A five-member board of commissioners who are elected to serve four-year
terms governs Alexander County. Elections for seats on the governing body
take place every two years with no more than three seats available in one
election year.
The board
of commissioners designates a county manager to serve as the head administrator
to all departments under the board’s authority.
The county manager’s duties include supervision of all activities
performed by the county’s 24 departments. In addition, the manager
is responsible for the preparation of the annual county budget; and supervision
of appointment of all county officers and any other duties required by
the county commissioners. The county manager consults with the county attorney
on a regular basis and keeps the county commissioners informed of all aspects
of county government and issues at hand.
Regular
meetings of the Alexander County Board of Commissioners are held every
other Monday in the commission meeting room at the Alexander Campus of
Catawba Valley Community College. Specific dates for commission meetings,
as well as other information about county government, can be found on the
county website at www.alexandercountync.gov. Commission meetings begin
at 6 p.m. and are broadcast live on radio station WACB 860 AM. In addition,
meetings are videotaped and replayed on Tuesday and Thursday nights at
7 p.m. on the Alexander Government Access Channel 3 on the Charter Communications
Cable Network.
